Aaron says this book was written for three main purposes:

  1. To push back on the idea that you don't need business analysts if you are doing agile. Aaron states in the book that the need to do business analysis does not disappear when you take an agile approach, it becomes more critical. He makes the assertion that agile teams make better products when you have professional business analysis and testing services on the team than if your delivery team was made up completely of generalists.
  2. To bring in the product thinking perspective with agile and business analysis. There wasn't any literature out there that puts these three very interrelated topics together. The book makes the statement that agile teams are created around a central purpose to build and develop a product.
  3. To bring the agile business analysis standards up to date. Aaron notes that the book was not written to replace the standards created by International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®), but to build upon and extend them. The Agile Extension to the BABOK® Guide is nine years old. A lot has changed in the business environment and the practice of business analysis in the last decade. The standards needed brought into the current world.
