CHAPTER NEWS

  • Wednesday, February 23, 2022 11:55 AM | Community IIBA Bluegrass (Administrator)

As you may know, the Bluegrass IIBA Chapter started an outreach to business analysis professionals in the Philippines last spring to activate the community and help form an IIBA Chapter in the Philippines. We began holding meetings in the Asian time zone (evenings), which is in the mornings in North America in May 2021.

Then the leadership team of Bluegrass IIBA Chapter started personal outreach to those Filipino who were attending meetings consistently and voiced desire to help start the IIBA Chapter. We started mentoring the soon-to-be leaders on all that is involved in hosting meetings and running an IIBA Chapter. Those Filipino leaders we were working with elected their own leader and selected roles for their team members.

That leadership team then began the paperwork with IIBA to be chartered as an official chapter with the IIBA. This is a process of submitting paperwork for review, then incorporating review comments from IIBA and submitting more paperwork. The Philippines BA Community will continue to hold virtual meetings during this process.

The Philippines leadership team announced that the paperwork process is close to being complete and we soon shall have an IIBA Chapter in the Philippines. Look for that announcement soon.

We are proud of the Filipino leadership team on how they have taken the reins of running the meetings for their community and taken leadership in the paperwork process with IIBA. We are also proud of the Bluegrass IIBA Leadership Team that was involved in starting the IIBA Chapter in the Philippines. We look forward to the official announcement that we have a new IIBA chapter.

Congratulations to Peter Neefus on obtaining his CBAP certification!

Peter Neefus is a Senior Business Systems Analyst with The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Peter has done business analysis for 30+ years, mostly in the IT department of a non-profit organization.  He’s also done some consulting with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software implementations.

Peter is still in stunned relief and thankful to God that he passed the IIBA® Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) certification exam on January 8, 2022, on the first try.  Peter thoroughly enjoyed the IIBA Bluegrass BABOK® study group the summer of 2020 which helped him get kickstarted in the process.  Due to a company policy change on vacation rollover, Peter was able to use a lot of accrued time that year to study.  He later also took a self-paced Udemy CBAP course for additional perspectives and listened to business analysis content while jogging and preparing for his first half marathon.  Peter took a break from the CBAP studying for the final stages of a software implementation.

Peter and his wife live in coastal Virginia and have two grown children, one of which just got married four days before his CBAP exam.  Besides jogging, he enjoys his local church fellowship, word games, helping people, serving as an election official, and following the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds.  Peter lived in Cincinnati as a youth and got to visit many places in northern Kentucky on YMCA field trips and camp.  His family later moved to North Carolina where he received a BS in Chemistry from Davidson College and an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill, both of which helped form the underlying BA competency of Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving.

Software Development Pearls: Lessons from Fifty Years of Software Experience

We are delighted to join Karl Wiegers to announce the publication of his latest book. Software Development Pearls: Lessons from Fifty Years of Software Experience (Addison-Wesley, 2022). It presents 60 lessons Karl has learned from both personal experience and from providing consulting and training services to some 150 companies and government agencies. Here's a brief description:

Experience is a powerful teacher, but it is also slow and painful. Software practitioners can't afford to make the mistakes others have suffered. Software Development Pearls helps you compress your learning curve—and bypass much of the pain—by absorbing lessons from others who have gone before.

This book   presents 60 lessons that you can apply to projects regardless of the application domain, technology, or development lifecycle. Highly pragmatic and illustrated with more than 100 true-story experiences, these principles, perspectives, and practices have proven valid for decades, and they will remain relevant for many years to come.

Software Development Pearls covers multiple crucial domains of project success: analysis, requirements, design, project management, culture and teamwork, quality, and process improvement. Each chapter suggests several "First Steps" and "Next Steps" to help you begin applying its content immediately—and begin developing products more successfully.

You can get a more detailed description, see reviewer comments, read several sample lessons, get a list of all 60 lessons, and view a video at the web page for the book, https://tinyurl.com/sdpearls. Of course, you can also buy copies from that page. (An audiobook version is forthcoming.) This is the perfect gift for those hard-to-buy-for IT people in your life.

Check out this valuable resource for your business analysis career. Karl invites you to share your review of the book on AmazonGoodreadsBarnesAndNoble.com, and online community groups as appropriate.

We have worked with Karl to introduce 24 of the 60 lessons in the book. Get some great perspective from someone who has been there and done that! Please attend our webinar on Thursday, January 20, 2022; at 2:00 p.m. EST on Software Development Pearls of Wisdom.

Congratulations to Svetlana Remnyakova on her CBAP certification!

Svetlana Remnyakova is a Business Process Analyst at University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Svetlana started her career and spent a lot of her time working as a technical writer in the IT industry. Gradually, she transitioned into the business analyst role, where she has been happily working for 4 years now.

Svetlana passed the IIBA® Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) Certification exam December 4, 2021.  She started preparing for this exam back in 2012 when she was on her maternity leave and was still officially a technical writer. Initially, she took evening courses with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, read the book and forgot all about it. In 2020 - two employers and two maternity leaves later, motivated by the wealth of free time provided by the COVID-19 pandemic and some internal structural changes in the workplace, she returned back to the idea of getting certified. She looked online and was grateful to find out about the Bluegrass IIBA Chapter, which was not her home city chapter, but which offered remote preparatory courses for the CBAP exam. She took the BABOK Study Group twice - once before she applied to take the CBAP exam, and once after. Within 1.5 years from the start of the first course, Svetlana took the exam and passed it.

Svetlana lives in the freezing Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with her two daughters Vlada and Varvara, where she had immigrated to from Ukraine. In her spare time, she likes to travel, hike and take random road trips to places she hasn't visited yet. One day Svetlana aspires to travel down (and east) to Kentucky to shake the hands of the Bluegrass chapter members in person.
